Tips for Prague excursions:

  • Wenceslas Square (Vaclavske namesti Praha) (formerly known as the "Horse Market"), which is nearly 700 metres long, is the largest cultural and commercial centre in Prague. The Wenceslas Square has been a witness to many historical events, big celebrations as well as demonstrations have traditionally taken place here, until today. The square is dominated by an equestrian statue, representing Saint Wenceslas, the patron saint of the Czech Republic, which is situated in front of the building of the National Museum. At present, mostly hotels, offices, expensive shops, fashion boutiques, souvenir shops and fast-food stands are located here.
  • Old Town Square (Staromestke namesti Praha) is the oldest and at the same time the most important square from the historical point of view in Prague . It began to be formed already in the tenth century on a crossing of important European commercial routes. Some of the most significant Prague historical monuments are located on the Old Town Square - among others the so-called Prague Astronomical Clock, dating back to the year 1410, which forms a part of the southern side of the Old Town Hall.
  • Charles Bridge (Karluv most Praha) is the oldest bridge across the Vltava River in Prague - it was completed in 1402. It is 515 metres long, it consists of 16 vaults and it is decorated with 30 stone sculptures and sculptural groups. The Charles Bridge has withstood many floods throughout the history and therefore it underwent a general restoration in the '70s and '80s. Today it ranks among the most popular Prague tourist monuments.
  • Prague Castle (Prazsky hrad Praha) represents the traditional seat of Czech monarchs and since 1918 also the seat of the president of the Czech Republic. The origins of the Prague Castle date back to the ninth century, throughout the history the castle has been extended and re-built several times. In its present form it is 570 metres long and 130 metres wide and hence it is the largest castle in the world, according to the Guiness Book of Records. The Saint Vitus Cathedral, in which the crown jewels of Czech kings are stored, is also a part of the castle.
  • Vysehrad was originally a princely hillfort, dating back to the tenth century, which was gradually re-built to a massive fortress. The fortification is located on a high bluff over the right bank of the Vltava River. Throughout its history, Vyšehrad has been, among others, also the seat of Czech monarchs - the famous Saint Peter's and Paul's church at Vyšehrad was built at that time.

Charles BridgeThe Charles Bridge (Czech: Karlův most  listen (help·info)) is a famous historic bridge that crosses the Vltava river in Prague, Czech Republic. Its construction started in 1357 under the auspices of King Charles IV, and finished in the beginning of the 15th century. The bridge replaced the old Judith Bridge built 1158–1172 that had been badly damaged by a flood in 1342. This new bridge was originally called the Stone Bridge (Kamenný most) or the Prague Bridge (Pražský most) but has been the "Charles Bridge" since 1870. As the only means of crossing the river Vltava (Moldau) until 1841, the Charles Bridge was the most important connection between Prague Castle and the city's Old Town and adjacent areas.
